Famous for: Portillo’s is famous for a few things…their chocolate cake, their cake-shakes, their yummy salads, and their delicious hot dogs particularly the Chicago-style.

Founded by: Dick Portillo who opened the first location as a hot dog stand in Villa Park (out in the west suburbs) it was originally called “The Dog House.

Fun Foodie Facts:

  • Not only known for their food but also their food ordering system that makes their drive-thru super speedy.
  • There are 7 key ingredients go on top of a Chicago-style hot dog.
  • Chicago-style hot dog started with the the Vienna Beef hot dog that gained fame at the 1893 World’s Fair.
  • Vienna Beef produces about 100 million hot dogs each year of which the majority are consumed right here in the Chicago-land area.
  • Lots of vendors describe the Chicago dog with all “the works” as “dragged through the garden.”
