Sultan's Market
~ 1985 ~

Famous For: Authentic and affordable falafel, shawarma & babaghanoush in a small Middle-Eastern shop with a salad bar.

Founded By: Masada Ramli, or May as she likes to be called, opened this Middle-Eastern cafe serving her grandmother’s recipes.

Fun Foodie Facts:

  • Sultan’s Market started as a corner store selling everything from toilet paper, cigarettes, sodas and the like with a few prepared foods to round out the offerings like polish sausages and meatball subs. Weird, right?
  • You can BYOB and enjoy the affordable food and save money by bringing in your own beverages.
  • Sultan’s Market has earned itself awards including Best Mediterranean food and Best Cheap Eats.
  • Steve Dolinsky of “The Hungry Hound” fame says, without a doubt, that this is the best Falafel in the city!
  • Sultan’s is cash only! Don’t worry though, there’s an ATM for your use.

Our Recos:

  • Sit on the patio for lunch on warm days – it’s great. Many Chicago Food Planet staff can be seen here.
  • Get the hummus as a healthy snack alternative. The flavor is crazy good and the price is right!
